This study provides a systematic overview of the definitions of bibliotherapy from various fields and contexts to establish a comprehensive approach and arrive at a universal definition for this concept. The research findings indicate that, despite variations in terminology and application, the definitions consistently involve the use of literary texts in various forms — such as books, stories, poetry, lyrics, scripts, or word performances — as tools for psychological prevention and intervention. This process is facilitated by trained therapeutic professionals who provide guidance, direction, and coordination at different levels. The study also reinforces the interdisciplinary nature of bibliotherapy, rooted in the intersection of psychology and literary arts. Additionally, the paper suggests the term “liệu pháp thư ngôn” as an alternative Vietnamese translation of the term “bibliotherapy”, with the goal of establishing a unified definition to standardize the theoretical foundation, practice procedures, and professional qualifications for bibliotherapy practices in Vietnam.
