THE IMPRINT OF THE APOCALYPSE IN JUAN RULFO’S NOVEL PEDRO PÁRAMO

Abstract

This article examines Christianity’s influence on Latin American literature through the case of Juan Rulfo, a master of magical realism. Drawing on the concept of the apocalypse in archetypal myth, which has profoundly shaped Latin America’s cultural consciousness, the study analyzes the apocalyptic elements in the novel Pedro Páramo. It approaches the work through three dimensions: dystopian elements, the perception of time’s passage, and the reconstruction of myth. Thus, the article demonstrates the uniqueness of Rulfo’s literature in employing a magical world to reflect the dark reality of Mexico during the 1950s.
